Speaker Profile

One of the most well known swimmers in the country, Sharron enjoyed an illustrious career spanning two decades. During this time she represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games and European Championships, and England in the Commonwealth Games.

Training seriously from the age of eight, Sharron was accepted into Ray's Port of Plymouth squad. She has described this as a watershed moment in her career, as Ray Bickley (ASA coach) laid down the foundations of the medley swimmer she was to become. Sharron went on to set a remarkable record by swimming for the national team at the age of eleven.

At the age of thirteen Sharron became a household name when she was selected to represent Great Britain in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Unfortunately, she didn't win any medals, but the experience was invaluable. In 1977 and 1978 she won two bronze medals at the European Championships, and two gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games. During the Moscow Olympics of 1980, Sharron won a silver medal in the 400m individual medley.

Sharron had a break from swimming from the age of eighteen to her late twenties in order to develop a career in television and build her modelling profile. However, in 1989 she returned to the pool, and went on to win two more medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Sharron finally retired from competitive swimming in 1994, drawing an end to a career that saw her break two hundred British records.

Sharron has had a wide and varied media career, working as a commentator for the BBC, and presenter on Superstars and Channel 4's Big Breakfast. Other TV credits include her role as Amazon on the hit show Gladiators, and appearing as a celebrity contestant on the ITV series Dancing on Ice.

She also played an integral part in London's winning bid to host the Olympic Games.
