Encouraged by her parents to believe in herself and work hard, Sarah showed a talent for the sport from an early age and went on to win silver at the ISAF Youth World Championships.
One of Britain's most successful female sailors, she achieved a lifelong ambition when she won Olympic gold in Athens in 2004, together with Shirley Robertson and Sarah Webb in the Yngling class. This was followed in the Beijing Olympics of 2008 with another gold in the same class (with Pippa Wilson and Sarah Webb).
In 2010 Sarah decided to take a break from sailing to raise her young family. However, the London 2012 Olympics gave her the opportunity to mentor members of Team GB.
2014 saw her return to the water, as a tactician and the only female in the Extreme Sailing Series with The Wave Muscat, and in 2015 she won ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year.
Sarah has recently taken on a different challenge - horse racing!
Sarah has also been awarded both the MBE and the OBE.
