Felinfoel-born Phil was a magician, remembered and revered for the part he played in the classic Barbarians match against the All Blacks at Twickenham in 1973.
Earlier in the season he had used tactical kicking to guide Llanelli to an historic 9-3 victory over the “unbeatable” All Blacks. He was equally effective at full back or in the centre, playing for Llanelli across sixteen seasons and representing the Barbarians in twenty matches.
Phil Bennett was a prince of fly-halves, baffling opponents and thrilling spectators with his sidestepping and swerving runs. He scored 166 points for Wales in 29 appearances, and another 44 for the British Lions in eight Tests.
Phil has a lot of wonderful memories to share, including his 50 yard run for a try against the Springboks in Pretoria that is recalled by those lucky enough to have witnessed it as one of the greatest tries ever scored by a British Lion.
