Speaker Profile

Garry Herbert is perhaps best known as the Olympic gold medal winning cox who steered brothers Jonny and Greg Searle to victory in the 1992 Olympic Games. Overcome with emotion at the medal presentation, Garry won the hearts of a nation. The following year the trio added a world title to their collection. Garry was awarded the MBE for his services to rowing, and was also part of the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year in 1992.

Never one to shy away from hard work, he has also had a great deal of success in many other areas of his life. A determined and tenacious individual, Garry studied at the University of Reading and eventually went on to become a barrister. He has also had a successful career in banking, working for the multinational investment bank Goldman Sachs - the leadership qualities he developed as a cox proving invaluable in the business world. Since retiring from international competition, Garry has worked as a commentator for the BBC and is affectionately known as the "voice of rowing".

Garry's knowledge of both sport and the corporate world makes him an excellent choice as a keynote after dinner speaker. Passionate about sport and business, Garry delivers inspirational and motivational speeches to audiences up and down the country.
